The funds received from the Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day have been allocated to CCFA’s Greening the Community Initiative which is an empowerment and environmental sustainability project benefiting the disadvantaged township community of KwaNobhule in Gquerbha (Port Elizabeth) driving social upliftment and environmental awareness practices.

The Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day funding is contributing towards the alleviation of poverty, assisting with personal and social transformation, changing and uplifting the community, preserving and educating around the isiXhosa knowledge of traditional medicine and indigenous plantbased food, creating a sustainable future while helping to offset carbon emissions with a tree planting campaign. To ensure project sustainability, practical experience and education are its foundation.

Therefore the implementation included a 23-day educational development programme for 20 vulnerable youths equipping them with vital employability and life skills to improve their chances of finding employment, an immersive wilderness camping trail reconnecting the youngsters to their cultural-environmental heritage, 2 horticultural internships, post-course assistance (mentoring, guidance with CV, help finding a job), a tree planting campaign of 600 trees in community schools and mentoring a nursery and cultural awareness Co-op in opening a nursery specialising in indigenous plants.

Thanks to the generosity of the Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day, the FW de Klerk Foundation was able to support the following organisations in 2021: Cape Town
Society for the Blind, Iris House Children’s Hospice, Life Choices and National Institute for the Deaf.

In 2022, the Foundation will use funds received from the Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day to continue to offer support to organisations making a real difference in the lives of children with disabilities and youth from disadvantaged communities. There are many wonderful charities working daily to improve the lives of their disabled and/or disadvantaged beneficiaries, most of whom have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Foundation would love to extend a helping hand to these organisations, to enable them to make a life-changing difference to not only the young people under their care, but also their families. The work done on a daily basis by these organisations makes a meaningful impact on the quality of life of hundreds of very special young people.

Masicorp is a non-profit organisation working in the education sector in the severely disadvantaged community of Masiphumelele, in Cape Town South Africa.

Funds received previously through the NSACGD (R233 000) went towards funding Learning Labs and after-school activities at Ukhanyo Primary School in Masiphumelele.

Here, children receive extra Maths and English support and also have the opportunity to attend chess, spelling and Maths competitions after school. In total, nearly 600 children attend these Learning Labs each year, as well as a  further 250 who attend after school programmes. Due to COVID-19, children at Ukhanyo have not been able to attend school every day. During this time, attendance at the after-schools clubs has doubled as    children seek out a   safe space in the afternoons, where they can join in on fun and educational activities.

Funds raised through the NSACGD in 2022 will once again help Masicorp to continue the work taking place in the Learning Labs, as well as providing opportunities for children through after-schools clubs and chess.

Books2Africa is an international Non-Governmental Organisation (UK registered charity no. 1152599) whose mission is to promote a culture of recycling and to improve the quality of education in Africa, through the collection, processing, shipping and distribution of quality books, computers, and educational materials, that enable individuals, institutions, and communities to acquire knowledge and achieve their full potential in a globalised world.

The founders of Books2Africa who travelled from Nigeria to the UK for their university education, started the charity using their pocket money. Without any government funding or grant, the charity has had to develop an operational model that is environmentally and financially sustainable, without depending heavily on public financial donations. The charity also created the 1 Million Books Club for individuals and corporate sponsors who sign-up to donate funds on a regular basis to support the charity in reaching its goal of shipping 1 million books to readers across Africa annually.

The Nedbank SA Charity Golf Day’s mission for 2022 is to fill up a 16-foot container with books, sports equipment, and laptops to be shipped to South Africa. Once the shipment arrives in South Africa, all donations will be distributed among various charities and schools.
