Bambo Children’s Home which is based in Crossroads and was formally established in 2013 after the founder, Thandiwe, found a child who had been neglected by his family because of his disability. Siyamdumisa was the first child she cared for. She currently operates the care home which accommodates 14 beneficiaries from the back of her own home.
Bambo Children’s Home offers basic education for the children. Each month Thandiwe introduces a different theme which the children learn about, and this is achieved through story reading, playing games and role playing (drama). With the support of FoodForward SA the children’s home is able to provide its beneficiaries with three nutritious meals daily.
Thandiwe hopes that one day she will be able to develop the one room house for the children to a double storey house with additional rooms and facilities. This home for children living with a disability has become a beacon of hope for the community of Crossroads, especially to other parents of disabled children. Next year Thandiwe plans to start a support group which will educate parents on how to care for children with disabilities.
