Mission Statement

Living for a cause beyond ourselves

Through our fundraising efforts from our annual golf day, we aim to provide ongoing financial support for sustainable, multi-purpose and life-changing projects that will simultaneously nurture holistic childhood development and help to end the poverty cycle in vulnerable communities in South Africa.

Our vision is a South Africa where every child lives a life with dignity, experiences a warm, safe and loving place to call home and has access to good quality nutrition, medical care and holistic education.

Our volunteer committee’s task is to organize and administer the annual Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day in an ethical and cost effective manner thus ensuring we raise the maximum funding for our beneficiaries whilst obtaining maximum exposure for our sponsors and partners.

History

Although the Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day is the 20th official SA Charity Golf Day, the event dates back 20 years to when Geoff Johnson organised relatively small golf days for South Africans in 1996 and 1997 which prompted the idea of having a larger golf day aimed at charity. And so he and a few enthusiasts organised the first South African Charity Golf Day at Mentmore in 1998 where it was held annually until 2002. The event then oscillated annually between Moor Park, Foxhills, Stoke Park and back to Foxhills where it was held from 2006 through to 2013. Burhill Golf Club in Walton Surrey, will be our home for the next 3 years.

Celebrities have participated very kindly through the years — people like rugby Springbok Francois Pienaar and national cricketer Clive Rice who, with Geoff, not only played in the day but formed a trust for the first five years to distribute funds towards sport for children in South African townships.

Nedbank is our main sponsor now but through the years many long-time sponsors made this charity event the success it became — sponsors like SABMiller, Callaway and British Airways whose generous airline tickets always added good revenue in auctions at the Gala Dinners. From year to year our golf day promoted tourism to South Africa through prizes and auctioned holidays. We directly promoted South African artists and entrepreneurs as well.

It is generally accepted that the event became the largest of its kind in Europe with on average 360 golfers and 500 Gala Dinner guests which have always included partners and additional non- playing guests.

Since 2003 our Patron has been and still is former President of South Africa Mr F W de Klerk, joint Nobel Peace Prize winner with President Mandela.

Since 2008 we have had the administrative support of the UK Region of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) who is still helping us to live up to our financial guidelines on redistribution to charities. We have raised in excess of £1.7 million for distribution so far.

This year, for the 6th time in a row, we have the exceptional support of one of South Africa’s top four banks, Nedbank, who generously decided to lend its name to the Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day – the first time Nedbank has done this outside of the well-known annual Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City.

Financials

In the past 19 years we have raised over £1.8 Million. The funds raised by Nedbank SACGD in a particular year are divided among the charities and distributed shortly after the financial year. The charities regularly report back on the uses of the funds received and whenever any member of the organising committee travels to South Africa they are encouraged to see at first hand the impact such funds are having on the deserving children.
